Chapter 10 deals with classes Vector and String, Enumeration Types, and introduces searching and sorting methods. These are technically covered in Chapter 18, but they are applicable to arrays and vectors as well.

This week you can choose between Chapter 10 Exercise 3 (p649) or Converting the Rock, Paper, Scissors example to a GUI format.

If you choose to complete exercise 3 on page 649 you will be rewriting the programming example, Pig Latin Strings (p625), so it can be used to convert text of an unspecified length to Pig Latin. The complete details of the program are outlined on page 649.

If you choose to work with the Rock, Paper, Scissors example (p636), you can download the example source code and rewrite it using a graphic user interface. Submit the .java files from your program of choice in Blackboard by Thursday, February 9, 2012.

Multi-dimensional Array Vogon Eliminator

To wrap up the subject of arrays and multi-dimensional we will build a program that identifies and eliminates one of the world's greatest evils. You may choose the evil you wish to eliminate. For me, it will be Vogon's -- one of the most unpleasant races in the galaxy.

You must use a multi-dimensional array and build a graphic user interface to give a visual sense of the evil you wish to eliminate.

Welcome back everyone! The start of the new semester brings us some old friends and new faces: Welcome back James and Matthew, Welcome Rebecca (:

Getting started this semester, we will be discussing classes and ADTs in Chapter 8. We will work through Chapter 14 in this section, and move on beyond that in the Summer Data Structures course.

Instead of working with the Day class, to practice working with classes, we will build the Candy Machine example at the end of Chapter 8 on pages 494 - 515. As is custom in this class, I expect that you will lend your own creativity and candy enthusiasm to the project. Submit your class files and test application file in Blackboard by next Thursday, January 19, 2012.

Public Static Void Overload(String Chris, String Nick, double Ken)

To top off the fourth Monday of the week, tonight we will discuss techniques for overloading methods of a class, a form of polymorphism. We will also explore types of methods, actual and reference parameters, and the scope of identifiers.

To try out what we have learned in this chapter, I would like you to create a program that employs at least three different methods with the same name. You will create overloaded methods which accept different formal parameters.We will brainstorm in class for examples of how this could be used.

Your example of a program which employs overloaded methods will be due before class next Thursday, December 8th.

The Method to our Madness

Today we will examine methods in closer detail, as they are covered in Chapter 7 of our text. Specifically, we will look at how value returning and void methods are used in Java programming, including how to work with actual and formal parameters. Although this discussion will revolve around the methods to our madness, it is certainly not intended to drive us mad, for we certainly already are.

The assignment in conjunction with the first half of this Chapter will be the isVowel program encompassing exercises 1 & 2 on page 437 of our text. Creative liberties are not required, but nonetheless encouraged. This assignment is due before class next Thursday, November 10th.

GUIs, Objects and Events coupled with Random Advice

Today we will explore building Graphical User Interfaces using the Java programming language as it is outlined in Chapter 6. This chapter also will help us build a foundation for working with objects, classes, members of classes, and event driven programming.

For our assignment this week, we will build our very own Magic 8 Ball designed to give advice throughout the day. Your Magic 8 Ball program should allow the user to enter and submit a question. When the user clicks the 'submit question' button, your program should generate a random number and then determine which answer to display in a message box or label in your interface. The response displayed should be based on the range in which the random number falls. Your program should contain at least 8 different responses.

Please submit your assignment in Blackboard before class, Thursday, November 3, 2011.

Control Structures Part II and Anti Gravity Techniques by Mr. Doob

This week we will continue to explore control structures in Chapter 5. In conjunction with this chapter, please complete exercise 5 on page 296.

In this exercise we will prompt the user for a 7 digit phone number and convert it to the corresponding letters on a telephone key pad. The program employs the charAt() method of the class String to extract each digit in the telephone string entered by the user.

Full details of the assignment are listed on page 296 in the text and an example program in shown on page 234. This assignment is due next Thursday, October 6th.

Control Structures and how to take over the world.

This week we will look at control structures and relational operators used in logical operations. Using the control structures and relational operators covered in this chapter you will become equipped to develop a solution to any logical problem.

In conjunction with this chapter we will look at the logic necessary to develop a business ethics class online, and in an effort to practice what we have learned we will also complete exercise 3 on page 219.

This exercise is due before class next Thursday, September 29th.

Tonight we will look at some of the topics covered in Chapter 3, including objects and reference variables, predefined methods in a program, methods of the class String, input and output dialog boxes and file input and output.

This week we will test our new skills using exercise 4 on page 165. This exercise will be due before class, next Thursday, September 22nd.

Getting our feet wet with Input, Output and Strings

Last week we began working with input, output and Strings. Specifically we began working with exercise 9 in Chapter 2 on page 109.

This exercise asks you to:

- accept five decimal numbers,
- print them
- convert the numbers to integers and print them
- display the sum and the average of the five integers

The complete details of the program are outlined on page 109 of our text. This assignment is due in class today, Thursday, September 15, 2011.

Debugging Clinic

One of the most difficult tasks of programming is the process of debugging. Download file DebugClinic1.java and open it in the text editor. This program has errors. The correct program should output text to the screen: My first debugging clinic is working now. Find and correct any errors by using the techniques that you learned. Save the file with the same name, compile, and test.
